I am a fully qualified counsellor, with experience working with abuse, depression, anxiety, relationship and family issues, work-related stress, self-harm and trauma.
I work with adults (18+) on an individual, one-to-one basis. As a Registered Member of the BACP, I adhere to their ethical framework in my practice.
As an integrative counsellor I approach each client, working with the person as a whole, and may use a variety of theoretical approaches based on what comes up, what feels comfortable and which approaches help you to progress in your counselling journey.
At the heart of my practice, I am a person-centred counsellor meaning that clients are met with empathy, congruence and understanding, with the client at the heart of the work that we are doing, helping to reach their full potential.
You may feel in distress and that various things are affecting your day-to-day life. It can then be helpful to speak to a non-judgemental professional confidentially to help process your emotions and understand a way forward that is best for yourself, working with care and compassion in the nurturing and welcoming environment that therapy offers.
Many things may lead us to want therapy, we may start to feel stuck, a sense of always looking back, deal with depression and anxiety, family struggles or issues within relationships, work and stress. We are all human and experience things in our own ways. Therapy can therefore help us to process this and building the therapeutic relationship is a huge part of that work in enabling clients to feel safe, secure and able to explore their thoughts feelings and behaviours further.
I work both face-to-face and online with clients as well as offering telephone sessions if suitable. I work with clients on a short, medium or long-term basis and this can be discussed when starting sessions.
I can offer a short initial telephone consultation call (10-15 minutes) to provide a check-in that we would be a suitable therapeutic fit and explain how therapy with Orla Kirk Counselling would work. Then, if appropriate availability can be discussed and a session can be booked in for a mutually suitable date and time.
The first session will be an introductory session, explaining the counselling agreement, and what you can expect from the counselling space, with a focus on what you want to get out of therapy. I encourage clients to see how they feel after the initial session to decide whether it feels like the right fit for them.
Generally working weekly with clients, however, fortnightly sessions are also offered to suit availability and frequency preferences.
Online Video sessions are offered using the Microsoft Teams platform

Orla has helped me in untangling the complex knots and layers of my emotions. She guided me to dive deep down into the root causes of why I feel or act a certain way which made me understand myself more. This has helped me in getting to a better state. She has been incredible in guiding me through it, listening to me, providing me with different outlets and exercises (such as worksheets and breathing techniques).
Orla is an excellent therapist. She really listens to what you’re saying and offers brilliant advice which has really helped me through a lot. Could not recommend her enough!
Orla is a highly educated and compassionate therapist and has made my experience with therapy absolutely great. She is professional and competent, always listens to me intently and gives great examples for things i’m not able to understand easily.
Where do I begin... Orla is a caring, professional therapist who not only has the ability to encourage you to think outside the box but she also teaches you self-care and self-worth. I have been working with Orla for several months but after only 4 weeks I could see progress and weight lighting off my chest and the well being benefits of, not only choosing to start therapy but choosing the right therapist.
It is only due to my circumstances that I have continued therapy for a longer period and kindly Orla not only gives you the control over your sessions but always accommodates your needs. I'm almost at the end of my therapy journey but I have learnt so much about me and the best solutions; you need to be honest with yourself, listen and use the powerful guidance that is learnt through her sessions.
I know I needed a qualified therapist and I think it was off a well-being web search that I discovered Orla but with no experience of knowing how to tell if a therapist is any good is to go with your gut feeling and that's what I did and I'm so happy I did. Thank you, Orla, not only for your knowledge but also allowing me to complete the jigsaw of my life with a positive outlook.
I cannot recommend Orla enough. She has been incredible in helping me navigate and understand my emotions, providing a safe and supportive space where I feel truly heard. One of the things I value most about her approach is that she never tells me what to do but instead guides me to uncover my own insights and solutions. Her understanding and empathy make every session so valuable.
When I needed to rearrange appointments, she was kind and accommodating, which made things so much easier. Overall, her ability to connect with me and truly understand my experiences has made a difference in my life.
